The purpose of this study is to illuminate the research presupposi￢tions in the area of intercultural communication and re-evaluate the validity of this presuppositions. This study also offers alternative theories based on different presuppositions to explain various phenom￢ena of intercultural communication. When new theories are applied to various intercultural phenomena, these phenomena may be explained in more meaningful ways.
Since modernity is dynamically changing as days past, so does the theory of intercultural communication. For examples, previous studies have tended to consider intercultural communication competence as the degree of conformity. However, intercultural communication com￢petence can be viewed as the degree of cultural uniqueness which is based on Gebser's theory of systasis. The same can be applicable to the phenomenon of intercultural adaptation. Traditional interpretation argues that intercultural adaptation requires both a process of accul￢turation and a process of deculturation, and requires unidirectional change of intercultural strangers into host environment.
According to this interpretation, the process of deculturation is viewed as minus-mutation. Intercultural strangers' original cultures should serve a unique and meaning role on their adaption in the host environment. In this sense, intercultural adaptation is a process of enrichment through continuous self-understanding by seeing through the difference between them and the new environment and requires critical examination of their prejudices.
