This study explores drinking patterns and the relationship between drinking and interpersonal communication among college students. A Finding shows that Korean college students drink 22.58 SDE (standard drink equivalents) compared with 9.6 SDE of American college students, which means Korean students drink much more than American students in quantity and frequencies. The more they drink, the more close friends are accord with drinking friends but the less they accept friends' advices related to their drinking problems. And the more they drink, the more they accuse their friends bringing pressure to drink.
Occasionally, Koreans maintain their friendship based on discussion during drinking. This study also found that the main reasons to drink was to enjoy discussion and to celebrate special events with their friends, which suggests that Korean students emphasize on social and situational factors rather than individual factors. On the one hand, it also suggests that Korean society emphasizes on collectivism in the relationship among friends. However, Korean students think that their friends drink more than they do but they do not blame their friends' drinking. They also think that drinking friends affect positively in their life. In the friendship with close friend, especially, they do not advise each other about their drinking problems. This finding shows, on the other hand, that Korean students are changing from collectivism to individualism like American students.
In this study. results of research questions was not contrary to expectation of this researcher. However. unexpectedly, main topic discussing with their friends during drinking is related to their 'future situation' rather than 'opposite sex' what is the research expected. This finding indicates that respondents are more concerned about their future situation because of difficulty in finding jobs after graduation.
This study also found that 'sex' variable and 'residence type' variable were more powerful factors in the analysis of drinking and interpersonal communication among college students. 'Sex' variable has been emphasized in various studies related to students' drinking. However, the fact that 'residence type' variable is important in this research related was newly found. Thus further studies should focus more on this variable.
Although this study is meaningful in the perspective of first research related to drinking among college students, further studies should research based on various regions and classes. And research on the heavy drinker among students should be also more concerned in the further studies.
