This paper examines Faulkner’s use of ambiguity in Absalom, Absalom!. In Absalom, Absalom!, Faulkner foregrounds the problem of epistemology by deliberately creating ambiguities. The novel’s dual focus is the key to Faulkner’s use of ambiguity, On one level, the novel presents Thomas Sutpen’s story. By presenting Sutpen’s design in relation to American historiography and Southern myth, Faulkner questions the validity of these “official versions” of American history. On another level, the novel focuses more on the narrators, Quentin Compson in particular. Through the inevitable failure of the narrators’ attempts to re-construct the Sutpen legend, Faulkner undermines the ability of the human mind to understand any truth and the world. In addition, Faulkner manipulates traditional narratorial conventions in such a way that the reader cannot know with certainty how to read and understand the novel. Through the deliberate creation of these ambiguities in Absalom, Absalom!, Faulkner foregrounds his radical epistemological, and hermeneutical, skepticism.
