The majority of college-English textbooks used in Korean universities are imported from the U.S. In this situation, the purpose of this paper was: first, to identify the common images of the countries introduced in these textbooks; and second, to find the textual features which lead to the construction of such images. The paper analyzed 8 imported textbooks, which are widely used in many universities in Korea. The analysis, conducted through critical pedagogy, revealed that America was portrayed as the most advanced country that played the leading role in the world; in contrast, the rest of the world－mostly the third world countries were covered in these textbooks－were depicted backward and longed to be like America. The textual features were heavily imbued with the North American perspectives, which will be discussed in detail. The findings as such strongly suggest the need to incorporate critical pedagogy into classroom instruction so that the teachers will be able to help learners to be critical and empowered individuals in the global society.
