This thesis studies about the translations of Sijo by Ryou Hyungwon, who was called Bangye. Ryou is the pioneer of Silhak, practical science in Late Chosun. He translated 17 Sijo with the title of ‘Bunsokga’ and the works are in his collection of poems called “Bangyeilgo”. This book was found lately.
Bangye collected Sijo that were popular at that time. There are instructive and satirical Sijo. The works are about enjoying free time in fields, having good time with drinking and enjoying short life, love, principles and improving oneself.
Bangye used various styles in translation such as 4 lines with 4 word-group, 4 lines with 5 word-group, 6 lines with 5 word-group styles and so on. (The number of word-groups means the number of words in one line each.) Usually he used 4 lines and 5 wordgroup style which is the ancient poetry style . He translated Sijo by shortening, omitting or reorganizing lines. In this way, he made works and kept the forms without limit of styles or words.
“Bunsokga” was translated 60 years earlier than “Chunguyoungeon”, the first book of Sijo. “Bunsokga” is valuable in the history of poetry because it shows the trend style of Sijo in the middle of 17th century. It was made in 17th century when many translated works were showed up. It is the representative work in the early translation period and it has effect on later works.
