The purpose of this research to Korean Old Songs translated into English is to seek an appropriate way. In this study, I focused on Jini Hwang(黃眞伊)’s Sijo(時調) works which have been loved by translators. The results of the study are like follows:
1. The only characteristic of Sijo form that are able to be translated is thatit is made of three lines and a stanza. But it is necessary for us to debate that it can be translated to two stanza or five lines because it has ever been translated so.
2. English-speaking readers through the translated works should be able tounderstand the social and cultural context and meaning without distortion. However most of the translations of Jinin Whang’s Sijo works have been mistranslated by lack of data about the lingual texts and contexts or extra-contexts.
For successful translation of Sijo works into English, we have to make ananthology of Sijo works in Korean, which contains sufficient data for translators to understand the meanings of works rationally like the explanatory notes of Yongbieochen-ga (龍飛御天歌箋), and to activate discussions about that the results of translation of Korean Old songs including of Sijo workscould get academic recognition.
