This study takes aim at inquiring the current of the North Korean poetry in 1990’s. The literature of North Korea in 1990’s was sensitive to changes of the political situation in North Korea in that period. This naturally followed the fact that the North Korean literature is essentially for the propaganda of the communist regime and socialism and that it, therefore, was affected by the present policies of the government and by the alternations of the political structure. With its critical changes in politics and economy, North Korea announced the typical North Korean way of socialism as its main ruling principle, and adopted various detailed policies for it. According to the trend of the political shift, the Independent Realism, so-called Juche-Sasil principle, was born in the field of the literature.
However, the North Korean literature in this period was also influenced by the artistic needs of the ordinary people begun in the 1980’s and by the flux in the environment of creating literary works. Reflecting all these alternations, the literature dealing with social-realistic materials has appeared, and the techniques have been developed in a peculiar way. The situation in the poetry was in the same vein, showing the corresponding pattern with the changes in society and the literature in general.
The poetry of N. Korea in 1990’s is divided into the two types of the following: ideological objective poetry and the pure lyrical poetry. The former are the structure-oriented poetry presenting the anti-Japanese sentiment and describing the anti-Japanese actions and heroes and chieftain creation and addressing the political polices of North Korean socialism. The latter is the natural pure poetry of manners and social custom.
The phenomena of two currents of poetry take place in 1980’s slowly and spread notably in 1990’s. It means that the pure lyrical poetry encroaches on the territory of the ideological objective poetry. The current situation of North Korean poetry in 1990's change the epic of writing history into the lyric of writing life. This change means the phenomenon of the transcendental ideology and the restoration of the nature of arts. After all it provides the foundation of the unified literature of Korea.
