The first Conference of Phenomenology for East Asia Circle (PEACE) was held in May 2004 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. It signaled a co-operative focus among five East Asian groups (China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Taiwan) in intercultural phenomenological research. This meeting was co-sponsored by the Center for Advanced Research in Phenomenology, U.S.A., with bona fide affiliated members from Europe and America participating.
The objective of the conference was to pave the way for an inter-Asian quest for cultural identity rooted in Asia's revitalized classical tradition. For a reference, we only need to take a fresh look at the Western model in our own time. A classical Greek text, exhaustively commentated on and long since stabilized in its meaning, could still open itself up to new and enriched modern understanding. This happened to Plato and Aristotle, to their ethics and esthetics, among other things, through the means of phenomenology. An interrogation of the founding layer of life-worldly experience, buried underneath the towering doctrinal edifice of the three great religions of Asia, should hold a similar promise of revealing significant original blueprints of Eastern culture.
As an instrument of self-reflection par excellence, phenomenology is uniquely qualified to aid us in an innovative and more discerning search for self-identity. This, in turn, may serve as the basis for a more critical and mutually fruitful philosophical East-West dialogue. The PEACE Mission Statement is given below with an expanded version of the essay, "The Imperative of Grounding Phenomenology on Tradition," a keynote speech originally delivered at the Hong Kong Conference.
