Traffic problems in cities caused by a rapidly increase car ownership turned out the primary factor of time and money wasting, and also led to other problems such as traffic accidents, air pollution and noise.
This study is a review the definition and policies of the bicycle transportation in some cities abroad and to propose some proper ways to revitalize cycling from the viewpoints of transportation facilities based on the investigation of present condition.
According to the results of above investigation and survey the desirable approaches for the revitalization of cycling are as follows.
The city needs a campaign to encourage citizens to ride a bicycle. while making it easier for bikers to take the bikeway by posting a guide map on the Internet or in public places to show the location of bicycle-sheds, where to transfer to subway as well as the distance and expected travel time from one place to the other.
Plans for expanding bicycle roads and parking lots are needed. Improvements of the bicycle roads are needed to fit these purpose, and a way to set up bicycle parking lots at school, station, tour sites is demanded strongly.
A way to promote continuity and safety as well as connection of bicycle and other transportation is necessary.
Finally, the recent introduction of five-day workweek system has emphasized the importance of people-friendly and eco-friendly transportation. Moreover, citizens are encouraged to refrain from driving a car for their own health and nature, while it is necessary to increase bikeway with sidewalk separated in main streets to help the good in exercise riding a bike to take a deep root in our society.
