In a sense, exhibition is a kind of communication that takes place between the artist and the viewers with the exhibit serving as the medium. In order for exhibition to be a two-way communication, visitors should be provided with information on the exhibited art work while the artist, the exhibition organizer and the curator should keep in touch with the viewers’ comments on the exhibits. Achieving this goal will take more than just offering a fine display that can help visitors appreciate the exhibits properly or arranging an exhibition in which people can feel the exhibited work through their five senses. To ensure a successful two-way communication, I think we need to apply this new method: “Minds-on” exhibition, which is expected to work better when combined with a workshop program.
In this study, I reviewed characteristics of typical exhibition methods, Hands-on and Hands-off methods. And based on the results of the review, I invented the “Minds-on” exhibition method and experimented with it to see if it could work in practice. In the process, participating in a workshop program at Tokyo National Museum gave me an opportunity to consider the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of an exhibition combined with a workshop. Grounding on that consideration, I suggested a “connector” who is intended to act as a go-between between the artist and the viewers. In addition, I designed a workshop hosted by the “connector” for the artist and the visitors.
Finally, in the famous Korean design exhibition festival, Gwangju Design Biennale, held in 2005, I played the role of the “connector” and applied this theory to one of the exhibits. As the “connector”, I conducted a three-session workshop before the exhibition, in the middle of the exhibition and after the exhibition. During the sessions, I gave necessary information to both the artist and the visitors and wrote down their responses. To ensure objectivity in this study and develop a better alternative exhibition method, I carried out a survey on how effective the artist and the visitors thought my new exhibition method was and how much they were satisfied with it.
