The Naksungdae Institute of Economic Research(NIER) has recently published several pieces of works, which in the eye of this examiner contain certain problems(either in theoretical terms or factual terms). The objective of this article is to examine such problems, and bring critical analysis of them to the readers. Also, a new perspective that should be employed in viewing the economic legacy of the Joseon dynasty (in a more positive tone) will be suggested in this article, with the phenomenon of 'population pressure' in mind.
There has been an established theory among Korean historians for a long time, which reasoned mat early aspects of Capitalism were starting to surface, during the latter half period of me Joseon dynasty, due to certain developments in agriculture, commerce and general product manufacturing. Such theory also argued mat the Joseon society was on its way to full industrialization, which was interfered by me advent of external forces. Yet studies at NIER confronted such theory, and argued that the Joseon society during that time period was in deep stagnation and was also in crisis, and would have totally collapsed on itself, even without the colonization of foreign forces. They presented certain points based upon statistical data, such as the huge downfall detected in both agricultural productivity and the general level of living, or the increase in death toll and me diminishing in population because of such death toll increase, to support their arguments.
Yet most of the factual details in those data needs reexamination, and even when verified, arguing that an entire society was collapsing on itself just because of such fluctuations in numbers would be far from appropriate. Such figures would be reflecting the reality of the time for sure, but grander theorizations based upon those fluctuations alone would not be recommendable, as fluctuations in productivity, living levels and population happened on a regular basis during pre-modern periods.
