The purpose of this study is to consider derivative meanings of the taste adjective. Taste words is more extensible in meaning than other sense words. Therefore, the study focused on identifying derivative meaning attributes of taste words through the meanings derived from the basic meaning of taste-related words. Taste words form the meaning field with diverse vocabularies same as other sense words.
As such, the existing studies on taste words have been conducted with concentration on identification of the vocabulary system based on the field theory, of which the achievement are notable. However, studies on derivative meanings of sense words including taste words were not enough. A clue helpful to define a derived meaning should be found in a dialogue scene, from which intuitional judgment is difficult to get objectiveness of a meaning; eventually, this is the reason why achievement of studies is not satisfactory too.
Taking the said respects into account, this study is to review derivative meanings of the taste adjectives, i.e. sweet, hot, salty and sour, and in addition to those basic taste words, and to look at derivative meanings of the taste adjectives for saltiness.
