Turgenev s critics have been arguing over the assessment of the character of the last chapter in First Love: some critics consider the two episodes in the chapter. the death of Zinaida and the death of an old woman. are in fact superfluous from the structural point of view; others consider both of them as meaningful; and the others think the only the first one can be considered as connected to the main part of the story.
This article contends that though the episode of the death of an old woman is clearly the added part by the author who wanted to shun in advance the radical criticism on the work as 'immoral one'. the first episode must not be ignored as a superfluous part. for it is thematically bonded with the main part of the story in which the love theme prevails.
To verify this contend the second chapter of this article describes Turgenev's philosophy on the love, traces the love themes in his several works. and finds that Turgenev's love has supernatural, irrational, and mysterious concept in that his love can lead the his men and women to the new passionate life, but in the end it causes them to have destructive life or even the death.
The third chapter of the article finds that in First Love Turgenev uses the suggestive narration to show the mysterious character of adult love which an adolescent young boy gradually gets as he witnesses the secret love between his unrequited lover Zinaida and his own father. and recounts how Turgenev makes this suggestiveness, using the dialogues of different characters. suggestive narrative words. And this study also finds that Turgenev uses Zinaida's daydream to show her dual attitudes to love: ' sado-despotic' attitude to those who love her and maso-passionate attitude to the one she loves. And this study also finds that Zinaida's the other day dream symbolizes the willingness to choose to love at any cost, even at the cost of her death.
This article concludes that in First Love Turgenev artistically reveals the real meaning of Zinaida's love in the eyes of young boy, using Zinaida's own daydreams, dialogue of characters, and author's suggestive words, and that Zinaida's choice of passionate love already hints her death in the end.
