This squib looks into the syntactic representation of the with absolute construction in English and proposes that the with is a complementizer like for in English infinitivals, rather than a preposition as traditionally assumed. This allows me to straightforwardly explain the inability of a wh-word to move out of a with-absolute (Siegel 1983). Specifically, given that the with in the construction under discussion is a complementizer, the impossibility of wh-extraction receives an account of the same sort as the explanation for the well-known that-trace effect in the literature.
