Most of the residential institutions for the elderly have played an important role as dwelling for the poor elderly and have been managed for free or actual expense in Korea. While the institutions for free or actual expense have the negative view of citizen, the paid-institutions have been recognized as the resident for a high-class. But as the elderly population has been increasing fast, the residential institutions will be an alternative residential type for the middle-class as well as for the poor.
The purpose of this study is to propose a revitalization plan of the residential institutions for the elderly. Through interviewing with institution's operators and analyzing the related laws, we deduced some problems and proposed five revitalization plans of the residential institutions for the elderly as follows; (1) resetting meanings of the residential institutions for the elderly, (2) improving a financial support and a policy of the government, (3) improving building environment and location, (4) allotting a portion of work to related organizations, (5) making the image of institutions better and activating an interchange with community.
