Around the 21st century, along with the coming of globalization, there is a crisis in national merits, folk custom and household concepts. One of the tasks of contemporary social science is to do its best to elongate the traditional culture values, to restore ancient outstanding morals. As a acolyte of ??kyamuni Buddha in the Sah? World (sah?-loka-dh?tu) of the mah?y?na Buddhism, Samantabhadra has an important position and a great role in the culture circle of East-Asian Buddhism, such as China, Korea peninsula and Japan. In Buddhism of the Han nationality, Samantabhadra is regarded as one of the Four Great bodhisattvas(the others are Manj?sr?, Avalokit?svara and Ksitigarbha) and there occurs Mount Emei as his site of enlightenmen, Shide as his nirm?Na-k?ya,
This article analyses Samantabhadra's status and token in mahayana Buddhism, and hopes for being helpful in the research on traditional Buddhist culture and in recuperating humanity spirits and social morality.
It points out that Samantabhadra is the acolyte in the right of ??kyamuni and Mah?vairocana (Tath? gata), the first disciple of all the Tath?gatas, the pramukha of all the bodhi-sattvas. It is "equal enlightenment" bodhi-sattva, whose position is only lower than Tath?gatas. Samantabhadra has asexual, and lives in the Sah? World or the world of padma-garbha-loka-dh?tu. It represents satya and dhy?na, and is the model of sad-p?ramit? which belongs to the practices of the bodhisattva. These practices includes ten of training paths and vows, and are encouraged by seven things. Samantabhadra's main function is to protect, propagate and explain the scriptures of the mah?y?na Buddhism.
