Spatial relations are the most basic relations in cognitive sense. People understand the complex and abstract phenomenon through the simple and concrete phenomenon. Spatial relations including movement in the space belong to the simple and concrete phenomenon. Actually, many phenomena having no straight relations or even indirect relations with movement are conceptualized as movement in space. Under this assumption we supposed that the movement metaphor is the strong motive of a polysemy of motion verbs. To show it. in this paper we analyzed polysemy of igti, the most basic Russian motion verb. The results obtained in this analysis demonstrated that there are some metaphors in the polysemy of this verb: (1) time is a moving entity, and time flow is movement in space, (2) state is a certain space, and its continuation is movement in the space, (3) process is movement in space, (4) recognizing images of an entity is movement in space, (5) it is movement of X to Y that X is suitable for Y. Besides, personification is used in the polysemy of the verb igti.
Further, we have confirmed that the same metaphors are applied to the polysemy of other motion verbs. It is remarkable that these metaphors are realized differently according to semantic and grammatical properties of verbs. In this paper, Russian motion verbs are subdivided into three groups: neutral motion verbs, verbs of departure and verbs of arrival. Each of them differs from each other according to its focus. Neutral motion verbs as igti conceptualize time flow as pure movement. And verbs of departure or verbs of arrival conceptualize time flow like this: time flows from the past to the future through the present. Similar distinction is observed in conceptualization of state. Neutral motion verbs conceptualize continuation of state or at least transition to a new state, but verbs of departure and verbs of arrival conceptualize escaping from a certain state or entering into a new state.
So far, author tried to show that those metaphors related to a polysemy of igti are also applied to the polysemy of other motion verbs. i.e. they form a regular polysemy of motion verbs. In addition, author showed that metaphors are involved in polysemy of verbs, depending on concrete verb's semantic and grammatical properties.
