In this article, I focused primarily on the meaning of water and the sea in Confucian and Taoist scriptures during the pre-Qin period. I researched the meaning and characteristics of water and the sea in ancient Chinese thought.
The underlying meaning of water is not only the common liquid that runs from higher ground to lower. Most importantly, it was a standard source of measurement due to the flatness of its flow.
The general meaning of the sea can best be expressed in two parts. First, people from that era pictured the sea as a dark and ambiguous place. Second, they envisioned the sea as an intersecting point where hundreds of branches meet. This cosmological point of view was believed to connect every object within earth and heaven. Thus, it was believed that through a symbolic interpretation of water, one could gain an enlightened view of life. Also, like the spring that is spawned from a mere trickle, we can reach the boundary of Confucianism by setting up and analyzing its foundation. Confucius and Lao-Tzu conceptualized an ideal ethic and moral system which was to later become philosophy and social ethic bearing the former's name. They did this through a symbolic interpretation of water and by relating an intelligent man's character, will, and morality with the image of flowing water. That is, Confucianism harmonized the concept of flowing water with human activity and pronounced it to be the origin of life. Confucius saw the sea as not separate from the people but rather an all inclusive material that can comprehend everything.
Unlike the Confucian view of understanding truth through the flow of water or influencing the behavior of people, Taoists, like Lao-tzu and Chuang-Tzu saw the truth in the flow and progressive nature of water. More importantly, they perceived an ultimate reality in water itself. Their search led them into the immaterial world and they soon recognized that they could reach the truth, or the origin of nature, through the various shapes found in flowing water. They then expanded their perception of the truth to the sea. They surmised that water and the sea are absolute and essential for finding or making one's way toward the truth.
