A capitalistic-patriarchal society incessantly reproduces the psychological problems in family and sexual relations. This reproduction makes us raise a question about family and female-male relationship. Because of this reproduction the study on the cultural imagination and fictional solution in melodrama becomes valid. Recent Korean films reassure that melodramatic imagination is still a crucial industrial and cultural resource. The 'melo-debate' in Cine21 and the publishing of the book, What Is Melodrama? verify this. The two cases, however, lack the right evaluation of the meaning of the melodrama genre in Korean film history and overlook the contribution of the intense feminist studies on it.
Melodramatic imagination originates from the social and psychological relations between the two sexes. The conflict and change of gender role and of the definition of femininity and masculinity are also the source of it. Since 1970s, the feminists in the West have concentrated not only on the analysis of texts but also on the context of the text production and reception of the female spectators as gendered group. Likewise the attempt to see the production of the genre itself and reception in a broader perspective could result in the historicizing and theorizing women's particular experiences and their positions in a patriarchal society. Surveying the studies on the "subversiveness" of melodrama genre, this article attempts to change the direction of the discussion of the melodrama in Korea to a more female-oriented and productive one by introducing the relationship between melodrama and women's film, and between the particular address mode of melodrama and pleasure, and by introducing the reception of melodrama according to the difference within women.
