This paper aims to illuminate the controversy over literary conventions and values between Francis Jeffrey, the powerful editor of The Edinburgh Review, and William Wordsworth in the early nineteenth century. Jeffrey and Wordsworth were at odds over the nature and state of the taste of the reading public. They took issue with each other' s view as to who should foster or improve the public taste and what should be proper literary standards. This reflects the struggle for hegemony between the established critic and the emerging writer in guiding and leading the public taste in the cultural market.
The heated debates between Jeffrey and Wordsworth were also conducted as part of the cultural war between the 'residual' Neoclassicism and the , emergent' Romanticism. The periodical criticism by Jeffrey, a leading critic in his time, was in no way "a vulgarized form of criticism," as M. H. Abrams contemptuously articulated in The Mirror and the Lamp. Jeffrey shared his neoclassical tenets with many of contemporary periodical critics, which demonstrates that the change of literary trends and the accompanying interpretive communities does not take place all of a sudden, but through the hybrid stages of the struggle among diverse and multiple literary principles.
