Robert Bruce, Earl of Carrick and future king, were sworn and appear on the Ragman Roll along with all the others in 1296. But he said to his father's vassals as follows. "It is true that at Carlisle I swore an oath as you know. But it is null and void since it was erxtorted by force. I did this thing from fear for the body, but not of my own free will. For this I am deeply penitent." Some chroniclers record that a Robert Bruce was present at the battle and active on the side of Edward I. I do not think that Bruce may have fought on the patriot side. Bruce could not stomach working towards a restoration of King John to Scotland. And he ceased his involvement in the patriotic resistance. Increasingly distancing himself from the patriots, Bruce decided early in 1302 to return to allegiance to Edward I. The prospect of a Balliol restoration presided over by the Comyns was something he could not tolerate since it would remove completely all possibility that he would succeed to the throne.
Why should Edward have given Robert Bruce a chance to air his claim to the Scottish throne? It seems that even Edward I was now prepared to concede the possibility of a Balliol restoration. Edward may have permitted Robert to persist in his claim to the Scottish throne since, in the event of a Balliol restoration, he could use Robert to destabilize the Scottish monarchy.
On 27 March 1306, Robert I was crowned at Scone. Scots ought to remember that his action was attempt to restore the liberties of Scotland. But on the English sides, his action violated Edward I's overlordship. So wars were broken between Scotland and England for many years. We must remember the Bannockburn war in 1314. English army was defeated in the battle of Bannockburn. It is possible that the peace would have been won with the war. Robert Bruce was now recognized as king of Scots throughout his own kingdom and much of western Europe. He had won the independence of Scotland.
As a final demonstration of Bruce's achievement, the treaty of peace was concluded at Edinburgh on 17 March 1328. Robert Bruce at last achieved the object for which he had fought so long: peace between Scotland and England on the basis of mutual independence. The Treaty of Edinburgh was formally ratified on the English side at the parliament of Northampton on 4 May.
