On 23 April 1296 the main English army set out along the coast road from Berwick. Edward’s defeat of King John’s supporters at Dunbar gave the English king the upper hand in Scotland. On 2 July John Balliol formally confessed his error in making an alliance with France against his liege lord and surrendered his kingdom to King Edward. Early in August John Balliol and his son Edward were taken by sea to England.
In the fierce battle which took place at Stirling Bridge on September 1297 Hugh de Cressingham was killed and all his army was put to flight. After the battle of Stirling Bridge, William Wallace was raised up to be ruler in Scotland. And the battle of Stirling Bridge was a landmark victory that restored Scottish confidence and pride, erasing the memory of the debacle at Dunbar.
In the year 1298 Edward gathered a large army and entered the country of Scotland with hostile intent, having with him certain of the nobles of Scotland to help him. At the battle of Falkirk most of the heavy losses inflicted on the Scots. After the battle of Falkirk, Edward seized as forfeit all the lands of many Scottish nobles who had fought against him. These he granted out to English magnates.
Some chroniclers record that a Robert Bruce was present at the battle and active on the side of Edward I. In the aftermath of Falkirk, his lands were not seized as forfeit to Edward I. So I do not think that Robert Bruce, lord of Carrick, may have openly fought on the patriot side. Also I think that William Wallace, not Robert the Bruce, was the principal defender of Scottish freedom. Many Scots of middle rank saw English rule as a direct threat to their freedom. So they were prepared to take up arms. Robert Bruce, Earl of Carrick and future king in Scotland, were sworn and appear on the Ragman Roll along with all the others. But William Wallace, vassals of the Steward, is not recorded as having sworn to King Edward. William Wallace and Andrew Murray fought on for many years, and the outcome was that they made England recognize that Scotland was a separate nation-state.
So I think that the mind of Scottish independence movement of the these days is derived from Wars of Independence in the thirteenth century.
