The most great change in the Japanese cinema occurred between the second generation and the third generation called the nouvelle vague of the Japanese cinema. Generally the starting point of the nouvelle vague of the Japanese cinema has been thought from Nagisa Oshima and his colleague directors in the same company. Their general tendency of the nouvelle vague is summarized with three point. At first they picked up the themes and the sources having been disregarded or regarded as taboo, in the substance. And the second, in the form and the style of the film, they break the rules having been fixed in camera work, editing and directing. The third, they attached great importance to director's thought, feeling and expression more than profits of film company or of their own.
But thinking of their general tendency, I cannot overlook the fact that there were the pioneers before 'the Shochiku Nouvelle Vague' mentioned above. That is to say, the young directors, for example Yasuzo Masumura, Shohei Imamura, Kihachi Okamoto, Chu Sawasima, etc., were attempting to change old convention and rules of the Japanese in substance and form.
In consequence the third generation of the Japanese cinema(nouvelle vague generation) must be extended from the middle of the 1950' to the middle of the 1960' that radical films were made in ATG(Art Theater Guild). This is substantiated by the rising of the new generation(post-war generation) in Japan in that period, and the nouvelle vague cinema reflected their thought and feeling with the films different from the old films filled with tears and patience.
The most important thing of all is not reconsidering the period of the nouvelle vague of the Japanese cinema but the direction of their own. That is the attitude with ceaseless criticism, change and resistance. The effect of the nouvelle vague of the Japanese cinema can be found in the directors and their work to give vital power to the Japanese cinema after the middle of the 1980'.
