This study is to observe how Korean folktales, the traditional stories, are adapted and re-created in North Korean films for children. North Korea has been using films that have powerful influences to the public, in order to educate the structures of a communistic society and enlighten people. For instance, "Honggildongjeon" and "Chunhwangjoen", the classic stories, have been made into films several times. Some folktalks have been also re-created and published in the structure of "Suryungnimi deullyoejushin yetnaliyagi (The old story told by the leader)"
Thus, this study at base deals with children's literature, traditional folktales and films. While there have been studies and results on north Korean modern literature, it is rare to see studies on North Korean traditional folktales. Recently, quite many results related to North Korean films have come out, however, it is not solid enough yet to deal with. Especially, in terms of North Korean films for children and traditional epic literature such as folktales and folklores, this study will be the first case.
This study focuses on, the present condition of North Korean films for children, the purpose of re-creating folktales into films for children and the introduction to its principles, and the analogical approach to Korean folktales' narrative traits. This study also deals with the introduction to North Korean traditional folktales and representation and the aspects of the transformations in North Korean films for children.
This study will be helpful to those who study in the related fields, since it is the study of both South and North Korean traditional children's stories, and provides useful information and materials. Now on, more developed studies and discussions on the same subject should be vigorously appear.
