Horace G. Underwood, a clerical missionary from the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., entered Korea in 1885 and went home on his first furlough in 1891. This was the first stage of his long and distinguished missionary career in Korea. During this period of his ministry, Underwood engaged himself in many missionary activities. Bible translation and publication, literary work, medical work, orphanage and educational work, and evangelism and church-building, to name some, were among the activities he did during that short span of time. But this essay is primarily concerned with some of his literary works and proselyting endeavors.
Underwood acquired good Korean language skills in a very short period of time. He could preach and write in Korean two years after he first entered Korea. As a pioneer missionary, he translated Christian literature and hymns into Korean, which constituted first Christian literature in Korean. But Underwood was most interested in publishing Korean scriptures. He translated, together with Henry G. Appenzeller, the Markan Gospel into Korean. Then he and his colleagues founded the Permanent Bible Committee in Korea so that they could translate and publish the whole Bible in a systematic way. One other literary work of historic importance was the publication of Korean language tools. Underwood published An Introduction to the Korean Spoken Language and A Concise Dictionary of the Korean Language.
Underwood was an enthusiastic missionary whose primary concern was evangelism. Dormant, but standing, anti-Christian laws and American representatives' instructions could not keep him from doing proselyting activities. He was more than willing to baptize Koreans against all odds whenever chances came. Described to be an “English bulldog” by his wife, Underwood was brave enough to make several itinerating trips into the northern Korean interior. During those trips, finding many Korean coverts who received Christianity from Korean colporteurs of John Ross in Manchuria, he baptized and encouraged them to persevere. He also established Saemunan Presbyterian Church, the first organized church in Korea.
During the first phase of his ministry in Korea, Underwood set the stage not only for his future ministry but also for the history of Korean Church as a whole. It was upon this foundation that the Korean Church grew and blossomed.
