Although there is a large body of literature that examines the skills and knowledge that coaches require (Jones et al., 2002; Martens, 2004), this literature does little to provide an understanding of how the coaches role changes as they transition through their career. There is also limited literature on how coaches develop their careers within sport organisations. The majority of knowledge about coach's careers comes from biographies (Charlesworth, 2001; Talbot, 2003) and industry journals (Hurley, 2000; Flanagan, 2001). This case study showed that Australian track and field coaches have a clear understanding of their role and how it changes as their career develops, however, track and field administrators and managers have not considered coaching as a career and as a consequence coach's prospects for career development are limited. This research provides a conceptual advance in understanding the theory of coach career transition and development, and suggests policy direction and a research agenda for future study.
