The extensive uses of sub therapeutic antibiotics to improve growth and prevent intestine from infectious diseases have led to problem of drug residues in animal products and emerge of new antibiotic-resistance bacteria. In this regard, the routine use of antibiotics in animal feed was less common and endeavors are made to develop alternate means for preventing and treating various disease in poultry industry. Probiotics and β-glucan are increasing being used in poultry feed, in place of antibiotics, as alternative means to prevent infectious intestinal diseases and modulate of immune responses, respectively. In previous studies, Lactobacilli and Bacillus subtilis administration resulted in improve growth performances and feed efficiency and stimulate the production of natural antibodies in chickens. Moreover, it has been shown that Leciobecilli and E. faecalis could be protected chickens against pathogens by colonization in the gastrointestinal tract. Dietary β-glucan has been also shown to have beneficial effects on the functional activity of macrophage and heterophils, and release some kind of cytokines after an immunological challenge.
We conducted several experiments to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of yeast derived β-glucan and single-species or multi-species probiotics on the productivity and immunity in broiler chicken. In Exp. 1, a total of six hundred thirty I-d-old male broiler chicks were divided into seven groups, placed into three pens per group (30 birds per pen) and fed one of seven non-medicated experimental diets containing β-glucan (0.025, 0.05 or 0.1%) and single-strain probiotics (0.05, 0.1 or 0.2%) or non of them for 5 wk. The body weight gains of the birds fed diet containing 0.025 or 0.1% β-g1ucan, 0.1% or 0.2% probiotics were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of the birds in the control group during the experiment period. The antibody titers against newcastle disease virus (NDV) and infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) of the chicks fed diets containing β-glucan and probiotics were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of control group. The concentration of cecal lactic acid bacteria was significantly increased (p<0.05) by the dietary probiotics compared to those of the control birds. In Exp. 2, a total of six hundred 1-d-old male broiler chicks were divided into five groups, placed into four pens per group (30 birds per pen) and fed one of five non-medicated experimental diets (T1, 0.15% multi-species probiotics; T2, 0.1% β-glucan + 0.3% multi-species probiotics; T3, 0.3% multi-species probiotics; T4, 0.1% β-glucan + 0.3% probiotics or non of them as control) for 5 wk. The average weight gains and FCR of the birds fed diet containing 0.3% probiotics were significantly improved (p<0.05) than those of control group in finisher period (22-35d). The antibody titers against NDV or IBV of the birds fed diets containing β-glucan and probiotics were tended to be increased. The concentration of cecal lactic acid bacteria was significantly increased (p<0.05) by the dietary supplementation of β-glucan and probiotics. In summary, the results indicated that dietary β-glucan and probiotics exerted a growth-promoting and immune-enhancing effects on broiler chicks. Furthermore, yeast derived β-glucan, and single-species or multi-species probiotics used in this study modulated the profiles of cecal microflora, reflecting potential alternative substances for the replacement of antibiotics in feeding of broiler chicken.
