This paper looks into pragmatic aspects of ‘-mallo,’ one of meta-utterance expressions. Various expressions of ‘-mallo,’ such as ‘annin-mallo,’ ‘mak-mallo,’ ‘shichet-mallo,’ show a fixed form and are inserted in the middle of discourses. What ‘-mallo’ refers to in a discourse can range from a word to a phrase and to a sentence. This paper categorizes the '-mallo' expressions into four types: (1) expressions of the speaker’s judgment about the act of the succeeding utterance (‘annihal-mallo,’ ‘anin-mallo’), (2) expressions of the speaker’s attitudes about the act of the succeeding utterance (‘mianhan-mallo,’ ‘andoen-mallo’), (3) expressions of the speaker’s judgment about the content of the succeeding utterance (‘sokdoen-mallo,’ ‘heunhan-mallo’), (4) expressions to reconstruct the content of the previous utterance (‘dareun-mallo,’ ‘shiun-mallo’). This paper presents five functions of ‘-mallo’ expressions. Speakers use the ‘-mallo’ expressions to emphasize their utterances by making them unique in style, to protest themselves in situations of losing their face. Such expressions are also used to draw attention of listeners to the utterances being made. In addition, speakers use the ‘-mallo’ phrases to urge listeners to understand them and to explain further what they have said earlier.
