This paper presents the development of a low-cost SDES (Spacecraft Dynamics and Environment Simulator) based on the recent state-of-the-art software engineering methodology. Standardized attitude control components models are developed to handle the functions and operations of the hardware components as well as the interface with on-board computer in real packet communication format. The environment model and spacecraft orbit and attitude dynamics are also developed based on an object-oriented concept. The SDES is designed to meet to communicate with on-board computer in CAN (Controller Area Network) interface that is widely applied for small satellite systems in recent programs. The SDES is successfully applied to a low-earth orbit small satellite system.
