Poeun(圃隱) left his hometown Yeong-il(迎日) and he devoted himself to nation's calling. He was academically master of Sung-Confucianism (性理學), and politically headliner at the end of Koryo dynasty.
His academical achievement led to Choseon's brightly developed Sung-Confucianism and established Choseon's governing policy. He deeply considered the changing orders of eastern Asia, and he insisted on following Ming(明)'s civil politics(serve big country and be friendly to weak country) beyond Yuan(원)'s armed control. This, too, did a deciding role in choosing Choseon's national position.
In addition, he died of loyalty for Koryo dynasty. There had been controversy over wether he chose to die or not, but because his death was directly connected to Koryo's downfall, he became a symbol of Koryo's loyal subject. Even after Choseon was built, Poeun's loyal death was commemorated nationally and it has been educated as social unification and maintenance theme.
Such achievement and death formed his outer image. Understanding and commemorating about him was only concentrated on his outer appearance, and the understanding about his personal life and emotion was relatively insufficient.
Yet he was a poet who left everlasting master pieces in Sino-poems(漢詩) and lyric-poems(時調). For poem is a kind of literature created by a dominant self, his poems symbolize not only his outer self, but also his inner life and personal hopes.
His inner self had a sense of being left from home. There has always been a strong will for retuning home when he was in the government service, or he was exiled for political reasons.
However, such return-to-home will was contrary to his social self's desire. return-to-home will and comfort his inner self desired couldn't join together. Therefore, his return-to-home will doesn't appear clearly in his poem. That is why most of the poems merely sigh solitarily or describe the eternal and lonely nature. He finally finds the lonely self that nobody notice. The self appears as a portrait drawn by a giant devoted to nation's project.
