Objectives : It has been reported that patients with body dysmorphic disorder(BDD) have some specific personality characteristics. The purpose of this study was to examine the personality characteristics, depression, and hopelessness in a Korean nursing college student sample with BDD.
Methods: Seven hundred and seventy-six Korean nursing college students completed self-report questionnaires assessing BDD, personality characteristics, depression and hopelessness. They were divided into the BDD group and the non-BDD group by diagnostic guidelines of the BODE-SR. The BDD group was compared to the non-BOD group using the Mann-Whitney U-test.
Results : Twenty three(2.96%) of the 776 subjects met the criteria of BDD. In the BDD group, the score of extraversion scale was significantly lower, and the score of neuroticism, addiction, and criminality scales were significantly higher than in the non-BDD group. However, there were no significant differences in psychoticism, lie, impulsiveness, venturesomeness, and empathy scales between the BDD group and the non-BDD group. In the BDD group, the score of BDI and BHS were significantly higher than that of the non-BDD group.
Conclusion : These results suggest that the personality characteristics associated with BDOD are introversion, neuroticism, addiction, and criminality. Moreover, BDD is highly associated with depression and hopelessness.
