The present study is to analyze the content and thought of Jeomchal Sutra, the ideological basis of Jeomchal Buddhist Mass, and, ultimately, to investigate the Jeomchal Buddhist Mass which was held in only Silla Dynasty among the Three Kingdoms.
Jeomchal Sutra is consisted of two volumes : Volume One describes the way to repeat the bad deeds by making wooden sticks and deliberating the karma; Volume Two explains the faith on the Mahayana(the great vehicle) through the Buddhist doctrine. Especially, in Volume Two, its analysis of mind and faith is very similar with The Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana. The two sutras are the suspicious ones made in China. At that time, discussion of the Buddha-nature was prevalent in Chinese Buddhism, therefore, influenced by the current, the two sutras have involved the Thought of Tathagata-garbha, naturally.
In Silla Dynasty, sutra comprehending the Thought of Tathagata-garbha already spread in late sixth century, and Wonkwang, initiator of Jeomchal Buddhist Mass, annotated on the Matrix of the Thus Come One Sutra(Tathagatagarbha-sutra). In addition, a study of The Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana by Wonhyo caused the spread of Thought of Tathagata-garbha more and wider. The fact that the time of acceptance and spread of Jeomchal Buddhist Mass and Thought of Tathagata-garbha was similar shows that Thought of Tathagata-garbha might be the ideological basis on accepting the Jeomchal Buddhist Mass in Silla Dynasty.
