Coleridge’s later years of life were devoted to metaphysical attempts to write the universal history by reference to biblical criticism and scientific discourse. This one-sided commitment, however, precluded alternative developments of his thought, which was associated with an unsatisfactory exploration into the question of ‘passion’. In this light, “Chistabel” can be assessed as a problematic work involving Coleridge’s ambivalent attitude on passion. It presents sexuality/desire not only as a powerful agent of human relationships but also as a carrier of guilty feeling. Coleridge, as it were, got into trouble in reconciling the question of sexuality/desire into his religious assumptions only to find discrepancy between them. This double stance, leading to the ambiguous figuration of Geraldine, Christabel’s unutterability, and the narrator’s adhesion to dichotomy of good and evil, reflects Coleridge’s epistemological dilemma left unresolved.
