This article deals with Coleridge's idea of Shakespeare as a poet. In his notes and lectures on Shakespeare, one of the terms Coleridge uses most often is nature. As in Johnson, nature in Coleridge's Shakespearean criticism is a basic concept propping his further arguments. For Coleridge, nature is of two kinds- natura naturans and natura naturata. Natura naturans signifies the inner principle of whatever requisite for the actualisation of a thing. Natura naturata means 'the total sum of all things, as far as they are object of our senses, and consequently of possible experience'. When Coleridge describes Shakespeare as 'a poet of nature', he employs the first meaning of nature. He is a poet who expresses the inner principles or inner law of nature. So to speak, he is the revelation of nature, 'nature humanized'. But Coleridge explains Shakespeare with a double focus, focus both on his conforming with spirit of nature and at the same time on his possession of a consciousness which does not exist in nature.
This double focus helps to understand his notion of Shakespeare as a genius and as a poet of Method. For Coleridge a genius must create according to the severe laws of the intellect, in order to generate in himself a co-ordination of freedom and law. Shakespeare is a prime example who obeys living and life-producing ideas, which shall contain their own evidence, the certainty that they are essentially one with the germinal causes in nature.
