Women have played a key role in the history of Christianity in Korea. From the work of female evangelists (so called the bible ladies) in the earlier periods, women's role has been essential in the maintenance and development of the church since the inception of Christianity in Korea. In particular, despite the persistent socio-cultural hostility towards women, women's leadership in the church has been a significant part of church development in Korea.
However, we are currently witnessing a crisis in female leadership. While a significant number of women came to be able to work in society as a leader, many churches and church-related organizations are experiencing the lack of female leadership. Even worse is the fact that the recent tendency of conservatism in the Korean church makes the development of women's leadership more challenging. Re-organization of women's leadership is a timely and critical matter korean churches cannot delay any longer.
This study argues that for women's leadership development, spiritual restoration is an essential and necessary condition to begin with. The spirits and practices of Jesus teach us to communicate with the powerless, which meet with feminine perspectives and ways of living. Communication and care are the qualities Jesus taught us to foster as Christians, and doubtlessly women fare far better in these qualities than the average Korean man. What is needed is to develop such qualities into a creative collective force for Christian movement rather than being succumbered to the traditional women's position.
Going back to the spirits of Jesus, this study takes spiritual discipline as the key method of women's leadership development. As a philosophy as well as a practical program, spiritual discipline emphasizes the following:
(1)the spirit of sharing, (2) the spirit of ecological thinking and living, (3) the spirit of solidarity and co-existence, (4) the spirit of social justice based on the love of the socially weak, and (5) the spirit of salvation. The study attempts to discuss the ways in which these ideas may be put into practice for women's leadership development in contemporary Korean society.
