In the late 18th century of king Ch?ngjo’s reign, various areas of military books were printed. Compilation of military books at this time had close relationship with national defence matters presented at the given time. One is great changes of warfare due to the development of rifles and advent of large-scaled guns. Mobile cavalrymen assuming higher importance to avoid the threat by artillery in battlefields, artillerymen accompanied by guns with guncarriage, and infantrymen armed with rifles. A new strategy was needed to combine these three different military organizations. The other necessity was that there still existed a feel of dangers against Ch’ing China and Japan so that there needed preparation for that. Under these two conditions military books were compiled heavily.
Generally speaking, features of compiling military books during Ch?ngjo’s rule can be categorized according to three following different periods. Characteristics of compiled military books in the first period were followed as such. First considering warfare of the given time military, training tactics conducted separately in each garrison was organized, and an unified system of military strategies was developed. Second fundamental investigations were launched to restore Oh-wi system. Third past military books were organized and recompiled.
Main feature of the second period is to systemize military strategies established in the first period, based on various data. Compilation of Mu-ye-do-bo-tong-ji is one example of such.
One characteristic of the third period is data collection and organization in the various fields to complete a new system of strategies distinctive from before. In addition, projects were launched to develop new gun weaponry and powders.
After the death of king Ch?ngjo, these projects of compiling military books had not been succeeded. Moreover due to conflicts with Western powers armed with modern weaponry, military books complied during Ch?ngjo’s rule did not have much effective values. However military books complied during Ch?ngjo rule sorted out traditional strategies of Chos?n dynasty comprehensively. Thus they have a value of setting foundation for new strategies afterwards.
