In this paper I briefly explained that what kind of process was experienced after palaeography was introduced in our country, and what kind of ways are required so that palaeography can develops in the future in a strategic dimension concretely. I also looked at what kind of role the Academy of Korean Studies must carry out in order to activate palaeography studies.
Palaeography aims to have systematized knowledge on historical manuscripts. It researches into numerous fields concerning historical documents such as contents, genre, form, materials, style of handwriting, maintenance and counterfeits etc.
The development process of palaeography can be divided into an introduction stage, a growth stage, and the take-off stage in our country. This study developed greatly because of the publication of study primers, the continuous publication of source books, the foundation of the Society of Korean Historical Manuscripts, and initiation of special study courses.
The following elements are necessary so that palaeography study methodology is developed. First, a detailed field of study must be established. Secondly, joint research must be proceeded between related study areas positively. Third, various methodologies suitable for the characteristics of historical documents must be developed. And finally, historical documents of Korea, and China and Japan must be studied comparatively.
An activation plan for palaeography study is as follows. First, Jangseogak, the Royal Family Library and the Electronic Library(Information Center) must relate closely and exchange information actively. Secondly, an education network must be set up for the training of historical documents researchers. Third, a consortium for the arrangement business of historical documents must be established. Consequently the Academy of Korean Studies must carry out its major role as a center of Korean studies.
