This study was designed to find ①what phonological rules had existed by looking into the historical changes of phoneme ‘/?/(?)’ and ②what the spread course of each rule had been by comparing its application percentages by province groups. As a result, the following conclusions were reached.
1. Six phonological rules ― the vowel harmony-destroying rule(‘?＞?’), ‘?＞a’ rule, ‘?＞o₁’ rule, ‘?＞o₂’ rule, ‘?＞?’ rule, and ‘?＞?’ rule ― had been applied to the historical changes of phoneme ‘/?/(?)’.
2. The application range of the vowel harmony-destroying rule had expanded from the structure description ‘[V, +RTR, +grave]({[C, +grave], h})[?, +RTR, +grave]’ to the structure description ‘[V, +RTR, +grave][C, -grave][?, +RTR, +grave]’.
3. It was thought that the birthplaces of the vowel harmony rule, ‘?＞a’ rule, ‘?＞o₁’ rule, ‘?＞o₂’ rule, ‘?＞?’ rule and ‘?＞?’ rule were Kyeongnam Province, Kyeongpuk Province, North Kangwon Province(the first birthplace)/North Jeonbuk Province(the second birthplace), Jeonnam Province, Jeonbuk Province and Jeju Province respectively.
4. Each of the above-mentioned rules exclusive of ‘?＞?’ rule had spread from their birthplaces into all provinces of South Korea. But ‘?＞?’ rule had been applied only in Jeju Dialect.
5. In the vowel system of the late Middle Korean, the features ― [RTR], [puckered lips], [spread lips] ― had functioned as distinctive features, and the features ― [high], [back], [round] ― had functioned as redundant features. But after the vowel system was readjusted in consequence of rephonologization of ‘?(?),’ the features ― [RTR], [high], [back], [round] ― had functioned as distinctive features.
