The purpose of this thesis is to inquire into by what cause the ‘?>u’ rule occurs, in its relation to the change of the vowel system. Additionally, by considering the aspect of its distribution aspect, the originating district and the spreading direction of this rule are examined out. In the course of this, it is grounded that the change of vowel occurs generally due to the horizontal migration or the perpendicular migration.
The results are as follows.
The change of vowel system brings about the raising of ‘?’ up to ‘?’, and then ‘?’ resulted in the vowel raising changes to the rounded vowel ‘u’. It means that the ‘?>u’ which is considered as the slanty change, goes through ‘?>?>u’ diachronically. And thus it is systemized into ‘?>?>u’.
In case of the dialect in which ‘?’ and ‘?’ are opposed to each other in modern Korean language, the ‘?>u’ occurs due to the vowel raising, ‘?’ up to ‘?’ and the vowel-rounding, ‘?’ to ‘u’. In case of the dialect in which ‘?’ and ‘?’ join, the new rule, ‘?/?(?)>u’, occurs due to the junction of ‘?’ and ‘?’ which brought about by the vowel raising, ‘?’ up to ‘?’.
In modern Korean language, ‘?>u’ rule occurs in the form of not only retrogressive assimilation but also progressive assimilation.
The originating place of ‘?>u proves to be the Kyeongpuk district by analyzing statically the realization frequency of the rule. And supposedly the rule spread into the westward district. Today the rule spreads from the southward district as a hub into the northward district.
