The urban planning law was extensively revised in Korea. The law took our changing social conditions into consideration. The amendment was aimed at changing current urban planning to more systematic and rational one. For this purpose the newly-revised urban planning law introduced a concept of sustainable development, in which environmental issues are able to be considered in harmony with economic development policies.
However, the new urban planning law has two limitations: The first is that the role of each plan in Korean planning system was not well-defined. The second is that the relationship between various plans was not clear. In this context, supplements to the new planning law are needed before the law is carried into effect.
With bearing this objective in mind, this study examined the concept of sustainable development closely in the context of urban planning. Sustainable development can solve the structural problems which cities have, and consequently to provide us environmentally better living conditions. Based on an application model of the sustainable development for a planning system, this study suggested some supplements for the realization of the concept within the legal context.
