This paper, unlike previous generative works on English phonology (e.g. Chomsky and Halle 1968, Borowsky 1986 and Kenstowicz 1994), claims that the velar nasal can be a legitimate member of the English underlying phoneme inventory. In doing so, it shows that a better and more coherent theoretical analysis can be offered when angma(ŋ) is postulated to be an underlying phoneme than when it is not, to explain surface realizations of angma in English. This work delves into dynamic realizations in English dialects of the nasal and oral velar cluster. This paper also provides good ground to test classic Optimality Theory (OT) and Optimality Theory with Candidate Chains (OT-CC). It is shown here that classic OT, other things being equal, is comparatively better fit than OT-CC to account for the English dialectal realizations.
