This article has put the emphasis on Leung Kai Chiu’s (梁?超) various attempts on utilizing novel as a tool of reformation throughout his life rather than his achievements on literature. Except the beginning (introduction) and the end (conclusion) , this article consist s of three sections named as “the attempt of creating new style novel”’, “the attempt to reform the literary style”, “the attempt to promote the political philosophy ”. Through this paper, we want to verify and revaluate Leung’s only creative work in fiction- ‘The Future of New China’（《新中?未??》） after kept silent for many years.
Unlike Leung’s enormous great works which always become popular soon after being published, on contrary ,‘The Future of New China’ was a very short work and likes a deformed hybrid suddenly disappeared from the society of literature. In Chinese academic circles no one has even seriously considered whether ‘The Future of New China’ is a fiction or not. Because no matter from the terms or from the content, ‘The Future of New China’ are just like a literary ‘neither fish nor fowl’. On the respect of style, it does not belong to the classic Chinese nor the modern Chinese. On the respect of genre, it neither like a prose nor like a novel. However, Leung seems very skillful on handling those characteristics, and mixed them in his creative life without any inconvenience. These phenomenon occurred on Leung’s creative life was a unique one in the long history of Chinese Literature.
Measuring with a definition of the modern novel, ‘The Future of New China’ can be categorized into a work of complete failure, more strictly, it simply is not a novel, at best, a style of genre between essay and traditional Chinese novel. However, there is a precious value being forgotten ? The Future of New China is the earliest political fiction in China, especially written by Leung Kai Chiu - a man most famous in the history of China’s modernization. At the same time, there are several characteristics in ‘The Future of New China’ worthy of the people today to study.
First of all, it is full of Leung Kai Chiu’s personal attempt to reform the traditional Chinese language and words.
Secondly, it is full of Leung Kai Chiu’s personal political ideals, concept of reformation, blue print of development.
Finally, contrary to Liang’s public opinion, there is a strong desire in ‘The Future of New China’ by putting the hope of China’s future on a few members of elites and national heroes.
From the standard of genre, ‘The Future of New China’ has no precise definition, the best definition can be made is ‘a nonfiction with a discussion and debate style, express personal political point of view and discussing the national affairs publically’.
Indeed, the most exciting part of The Future of New China is the part of debate for the contemporary political situation of China , such as the third section, more than 16,000 words are directly discussing around a main theme of how to reform China's political situation. If viewing ‘The Future of New China’ as a novel reluctantly, then only the fourth section barely can be called.
