About the topic of the Chinese ethnic character, namely the general evaluation about the Chinese people’s ethnic character, has been argued popularly and seriously in both local Chinese society and external international community, with subjective or objective concepts. The formation of this phenomenon was interwoven with a long vertical process of history and a broader horizontal coverage of society.
Generally speaking, from the beginning of 20 century, the criticism about Chinese ethnic character, no matter which happened at the native land or from abroad, has never stopped.
Actually, accompany with the development of society, the improvement of school education, relatively, the definition about the ethnic characteristics of Chinese people also already had a qualitative change.
From late Qing Dynasty to the May-4-Movement, during the period of national calamity happened frequently in China, the thinkers of enlightenment, who udertook a self-criticism against the ethnic characteristics, mainly focused on how to get people liberated from the original ignorance and servility situation, and to wake up their countrymen, furthermore their mother nation.
During this period, Leung Kai Chiu and Lu Xun, the two most representative figures in modern China who engaged a comprehensive and profound criticism on the ethnic character of their countrymen remained behind a deep and lasting influence for their country. As Lu Xun just stopped properly after playing a serial of serious criticism through most of his satire literary works but not able to propose more comprehensive and specific remedies, on the contrary, after criticizing, Leung had proposed a lot of practical and effective theories, programs, policy in order to improve the ethnic character of his countrymen. This is what Leung’s special and positive side which different from Lu Xun and many other contemporary intellectuals.
Since the late twentieth century, after a long term of political movements, as the physical and spiritual life of most Chinese people got liberated step by step, accompany with a rapid modernization and urbanization, the living style and quality of Chinese society being improved, then the definition surround the Chinese ethnic character goes forward a quite different direction. People began to demand more individual independence, more personal privacy, also began to pay attention on how to awake the conscience and humanism among their countrymen.
As soon as step into the 21st century, when the values of Chinese people appropriate with the worldwide standard, we can foresee that they will step behind what most western developed countries had experienced, begin to demand more freedom in the city life , to pay more attention on the public morality, to gain more benefits through politic activities. Furthermore, they will use the upper media such as literature, aesthetics and philosophy, attempt to achieve a more perfect and noble ethnic character through the self-confessions, the recognition of universal values and the unyielding pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty.
