Proverbs form a linguistic category of which all the constituents are frozenm and we only need to quote them when we use them. Therefore, it is generally assumed that it would be easy to build up a dictionary of proverbs. However, there are many problems, some of which we will deal with in this article.
If we present two major problems, we can point out that there are a good many variants for each proverb, more than we expected, and that, in many cases, it is difficult to distinguish proverbs from lexical frozen expressions, which roughly correspond to the so-called ‘idioms’. The first problem gives rise to the multiplication of the entry words or to the difficulty of deciding which form we should consider as canonical. We decided to register all the variants of each proverb, considering computational efficiency, because our dictionary is a machine-readable one. And the second is related to the vague notion of proverb. We examine the traditional definitions and present our criteria by which one can judge the identity of proverb category, such as the impossibility of governing any argument and taking tense variation.
