This study examined the cases in which a word or a phrase that is part of a proverb is used separately and discussed the “background and principles of the separation, the process and conditions of understanding the meaning of the separated components, and the effects of using the separated components.” A proverb signifies a certain “situation,” and using a proverb, thus presupposes a character and event. An analysis of a proverb’s internal components is necessary to learn a proverb. These two characteristics of proverbs form the background for the separation. The separation of the components of a proverb follows the principle of systematic correspondence between “form, literal meaning, idiomatic meaning, and the referent.” To understand the separated components, it is important to 1) recall the intact form of the proverb, 2) segment the idiomatic meaning, 3) and to connect the separated pairs with the component of the situation indicated by the proverb. Linguistic devices are introduced in texts to make this process easier. The separated components of a proverb can provide a perspective for a situation, create a new expression that effectively transmits the meaning, and emphasize the meaning the speaker wishes to deliver.
