This paper was prepared for common use of experience during the renewal of Daum online encyclopedia in 2007. At first, I will overview the internet encyclopedia enterprise. Then I will show you the direction of the Daum online encyclopedia. Finally I will attempt to look into the future of online encyclopedia, in general term.
There are two axes of the Daum online encyclopedia. One is ensuring the UGC (user generated content) including Wikipedia. The other is the consolidation of search results. For the latter, I divided the encyclopedia DB in detail and mixed each result as one dynamically. 'Divide and conquer' was the best solution.
Wikipedia changed all encyclopedias. The key components of Wikipedia are the Copyleft Movement, the wiki wiki system and the needs for public encyclopedia of netizens. The Wiki Way of knowledge archiving will be developed for a while.
I think the publicity of internet and encyclopedia will be empowered. For the trend, academia and industry must work together. The Daum online encyclopedia is one of the results of the cooperation between academia and industry. Because internet services became the life already, I think the academia must make efforts for internet industry with the academic professionalism, from now on.
