The paper discusses the status of the onglides [w] and [y] in General American English. Especially these onglides could not be explained adequately with rule derivation or absolute principles in the rule-based approach. They should be analysed from the interaction of violable and relatively ranked constraints.
The purpose of the paper is to reconsider the status of the onglides [w] and [y] with the framework of constraint-based theory. Needed constraints and their ranking are available for our discussion of the English onglides. From the constraint-based perspective, a few constraints and their ranking are suggested as follows :
No Comp (V) ≫ OCP ≫ Max-IO ≫ No Comp(Son) ≫ No Comp(C)
I have seen that the optimal forms among a few candidates in each examples can be well selected by the above constraint hierarchy.
