In this paper we have discussed the properties of VG and NG in English, and the similarities between VG and NG. And we have investigated the process of derivations of VG and NG. This paper can be summarized and concluded as follows:
First, gapping in English can be classified as VG and NG.
Second, the similar properties of between VG and NG can be summarized as follows:
(1) VG and NG occur only with the coordinating conjunctions and, or, and nor.
(2) Only two remnants are allowed in most instances of VG and NG.
(3) Preposition stranding is not allowed in VG and NG.
(4) In English, VG and NG can only apply forward. but not backward.
(5) VG and NG in English can occur in the second conjunct, but not in the first conjunct.
(6) VG and NG are subject to a certain type of locality constraint.
Third, VG and NG can be derived by applying the rightward movement analysis.
