The purpose of this article is to show how much Jane Austen recognized the women's problems, how her feminism is presented in her major novel, Pride and Prejudice. Austen successfully draws the tracing of the process of Elizabeth's self-recognition from immaturity and inexperience to a better understanding of herself and her world.
Marriage is the main theme of Pride and Prejudice. Elizabeth is also convinced that a good marriage depends on previous awareness of mutual strengths and shortcomings. Marriage means a complex engagement between the marrying couple and society. An individual is a social being and apart from society the individual cannot exist. So she sees the individual as a isolated human being within herself but as a member of social class.
Elizabeth rejects the marriage without love, mutual respect and understanding. She doesn't submit herself to the image of the common women and develops herself and marries Darcy in an equal relationship, not in a subordinate one. Their marriage is also significant in the sense of compromise between the middle class and the aristocracy.
Austen shows the economic, educational and vocational inequality between men and women, which she thought the foundations of the social evil in general. And she suggests a possibility of solution by making her heroines example to overcome such handicaps along the path to self-discovery. This means that woman can get out of the subjection under social conditions by he mental maturity. In the process of Darcy and Elizabeth's marriage, the hero's pride and the heroine's excessive prejudice caused a lot of troubles and conflicts all the time. The self-recognition of Elizabeth and Darcy allows them to their romantic marriage.
In this novel, it is emphasized that to accept the regulation and responsibility to keep the society harmonious. At the same time, the author doesn't want the individual to be oppressed by customs and manners. Elizabeth is given hopeful future which won't damage her independent mind even within the boundary of the established society.
