This paper analyzes the Gyeongseong Communist Groups, which was one of the communist organizations operating during the final period of Japanese colonial rule, perception of the domestic and international political situation. Moreover, by studying the anti-fascist popular front, this study also strives to analyze national liberation organizations perceptions of the fascist-based ruling system and their resistance activities.
The Gyeongseong Communist Groups perception of international politics during this period can be summed as follows: their beliefs in the eventual collapse of global imperialism; the victory of the socialist revolution; and the defeat of Japan in the second Sino-Japanese War. More to the point, they believed that global imperialism would collapse as a result of the internecine wars between the imperialist powers, and that Japan, which had invaded China, would eventually be defeated by a combination of its own lack of resources, the Kuomintang-Communist united front, and guerrilla activities. As far as the domestic political situation was concerned, the Gyeongseong Communist Group believed that the lack of resources within Korea proper, more specifically the lack of food, which was the result of the long-enduring Sino-Japanese War, would lead to a furious uprising among the Minjung. They also focused their attention on the fascistic and oppressive nature of the state, including the Government-General of Joseons Naeseon Ilche policy. The Gyeongseong Communist Group also understood that even the bourgeoisie opposed the prohibition of the usage of Korean and the ordinance forcing Koreans to change their names to Japanese ones.
Based on the above-mentioned perceptions of the domestic and international spheres, the Gyeongseong Communist Group intended to integrate national opposition to the war, Japanese imperialism, and fascist-oriented ruling system into an anti-imperialist and anti-fascist popular front. The Gyeongseong Communist Group adopted two different policies with regards to this popular front strategy: First, based on the principles of joint struggle, construct a top to bottom united front with the nationalist forces, especially the anti-imperialistic and anti-war groups found within religious organizations. Second, establish petty bourgeois organizations centered around the urban petty bourgeoisie and intellectuals, and form a grassroots-based united front with revolutionary organizations. The Gyeongseong Communist Group, which established this popular front, considered a government ruled by the people as the form of state it would bring about. This popular front wished to create a government based on a proletarian hegemony, one which displayed the characteristics of an interim government which would eventually give way to a peoples democratic dictatorship.
However, it would be wrong to assume that the Gyeongseong Communist Groups ultimate goal was to establish a top-to-bottom united front. Rather their aim was to rebuild the Joseon Communist Party, and establish a proletarian hegemony. As such, the Gyeongseong Communist Group was concentrated on building the base needed to reestablish the Joseon Communist Party while focusing their activities on the recruiting of laborers and farmers.
